Beware of Legionella bacteria:
This is why cooling water hygiene is so important.
Not only cooling water, but all water-based liquids between 20 and 50 degrees Celsius provide an excellent breeding ground for various germs and pathogens. Some of them, such as Legionella bacteria, can be released into the environment via aerosols and thus also transmitted through the air. Aerosols are tiny particles suspended in gases. This includes water in the form of water vapor, for example.
If the cooling tower releases water vapor and warm, humid air into the environment during the cooling process, pathogens such as Legionella can be easily spread. In evaporative cooling towers, Legionella infections can occur within a radius of up to 10 kilometers around the cooling tower if the cooling water there is contaminated. This makes it all the more important to maintain and inspect the cooling tower regularly. Known outbreaks of Legionella caused by cooling towers occurred, for example, at the turn of 2009/2010 in Ulm, in 2013 in Warstein, and in Bremen in 2016. read more...
